Invisalign FAQs

  • Removable appliances have been used successfully by dentists and orthodontists for years! The introduction of Align Technology's 3D computer technology and mass-customisation now allows the Invisalign System to treat a wide range of patients.

  • In 1945, Dr. H.D. Kiesling envisioned that future technology would allow dentists and orthodontists to use a series of specifically shaped tooth positioners to precisely align teeth. Align Technology was founded in 1997 and has developed this requirement.

  • Invisalign aligners move teeth with a specifically tailored force. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is able to control both the amount of movement per aligner and the timing of the movement. With each aligner, only certain teeth are allowed to move. The result is an efficient force delivery and teeth alignment system.

  • Strong, medical grade thermoplastic material, developed solely for the Invisalign System.

  • Appointment intervals are generally the same as with traditional braces, but as no adjustments need to be made to wires/brackets, appointments are usually shorter! You may need to visit roughly every 4 to 6 weeks to ensure treatment is progressing as planned and receive your next sets of Invisalign aligners, but this interval can vary.

  • Treatment duration is generally comparable to that of braces and can typically take 9 to 18 months. This time can vary however, and an appointment can provide you with a much better estimate!

  • With new alignment stage, some people may experience a minor feeling of pressure. For those who do experience this, it typically only lasts for a few days. This is a sign that the aligners are working, moving your teeth gradually, helping you to achieve the final results!

  • Crowns (tooth caps) do not usually affect treatment. In some cases however, small tooth-coloured composites called "attachments" are required to help achieve certain movements. These must be bonded to the tooth, and can be more difficult to bond to crowns. In these cases, we will carefully evaluate the location of crows to develop a solution.

  • Not at all!

You can eat and drink whatever you like during treatment because you can remove your aligners. It is both easy and necessary to brush and floss your teeth after each meal and prior to re-inserting your aligners to maintain proper hygiene.

  • Aligners should be worn at all times during treatment, except when eating, brushing or flossing teeth.
