Dental implants are an excellent solution for missing teeth, whether you’ve lost one single tooth due to injury or decay, a few teeth in a row or you have a full set of dentures. Your dentist in Sydney can replace those missing teeth with dental implants to restore the look of your smile and, of course, the function of your teeth. The false teeth that implants support look and feel completely real so you can rest assured your new smile will look natural.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants consist of a small metal screw which is made of titanium that is inserted directly into your jaw bone. It serves as the root of a tooth and not only secures a single tooth or multiple teeth in place but it also has the added benefit of supporting the jaw bone which becomes degraded over time once there are no longer teeth for it to support.

What kind of dental implants are there?

Dental implants can serve 3 different purposes at a dentist in Sydney and each purpose can serve a range of needs:

Single missing tooth – If you have had one tooth knocked out or extracted and need to fill that gap, a single implant can be used to support a single crown. A crown is a piece of porcelain that is shaped to look like a tooth. It will be custom-made to look like your other teeth in appearance; the size, shape and transparency can be made to match perfectly. This crown is thatched to an abutment which is like a small screw that fits inside the bigger implant but sticks up above the gum in order for the crown to have something to attach to.

Multiple missing teeth – If you have a few teeth missing in a row, we can create a bridge of ceramic teeth that close that large gap on the surface above the gum. We will only need to insert 2 implants to support an entire bridge but this bridge of teeth will then be secure and fixed in place. Extra care needs to be taken with oral hygiene if you have a bridge in order to make sure that there is no food or particles build-up between the bridge and gum which can cause bad breath or infection.

Dentures – There is a dental implant technique called All-On-Four where we can support all of your false teeth on only 4 implants. By using X-rays we will be able to establish where best to insert the implants so that the teeth are properly supported and the bones grow back in the right place because the human bone really likes to grow around titanium. By supporting all of your dentures in this way you endure the strength of your jaw for years to come.

Major surgery

It should be noted that a big surgery at a dentist in Sydney is required to place an implant, and the more implants needed, the longer the surgery. There is also a long healing process of 6 months that needs to be observed before any crown, bridge or denture can be permanently fitted to the implants.
