Veneers; FAQs answered by our dentist

dentist-sydney

When it comes to choosing a procedure that can offer the whitening effect of standard bleaching, the minor correction associated with some removable aligners and the sensitivity reducing agents of some toothpaste, veneers are the best options available for many patients.

While also being able to close minor gaps and conceal cracks that may have appeared on your teeth!

At Spa Dental, our dentist Sydney has helped many patients to restore their smiles using veneers and will be more than happy to discuss this treatment option with you.

In this article, our dentist Sydney answers common questions that we have received about veneers over the years, so read on to learn more.

Do veneers hurt when they are fitted?

In a word, no.

Our dentist Sydney will not need to apply any local anaesthetic when they fit your veneers. The process involves a gentle sanding of the front of the tooth that the veneer is going to be attached to, which should be painless. Once we are happy that the tooth is sufficiently sanded, we will apply dental cement to secure the veneer to the tooth. When the cement has been set, the veneer is in place and you can go about your day as normal. Great!

How long do they last?

With correct care, veneers can easily last over 10 years.

This means that you will need to brush the teeth that they are attached to and will need to visit our team every 6 months to ensure that the veneers have not come loose and that there is no decay setting in underneath.

You will also need to keep an eye out for signs of gum disease and should also refrain from smoking, as this can cause the gums to recede which can loosen the veneers. Also, if you are a fan of drinking alcohol, you may need to cut back to promote longevity with your veneers.

If you would like support with quitting smoking, call our team.

Are they purely cosmetic?

No, they are not.

While veneers can offer a cosmetic advantage, they can also be used to add support to a tooth that has undergone a root canal and can also be used to reduce sensitivity in the tooth. This will only work if the sensitivity is caused by microscopic holes in the enamel, which the veneer will cover when it is placed.

Can I get any shade of veneer that I want?

Yes, you can!

If you want your veneers to be as natural looking as possible, our team will be able to colour match them to your surrounding teeth.

But, if you are having multiple veneers fitted, you can ask our team to make them whiter, to give a smile that will turn heads!

Can they be placed on teeth that have fillings?

Yes they can, providing that the tooth that has the filling is not succumbing to decay and that the filling is stable.

If your filling has come loose and decay has set in underneath, then we will need to deal with this issue before we fit a veneer.
