A reputation it doesn't deserve

Root canal treatment gets a reputation it doesn't deserve. Modern technique and anaesthetic mean the procedure itself is comparable to having a filling, and the alternative, extraction, means losing a natural tooth that a root canal could otherwise save.

When it's needed

When root canal is needed

Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth itself can be saved. It's usually needed when:

Common reasons root canal is recommended:

Deep decay reaching the nerve

Where decay has progressed into the tooth's pulp.

The process

How it works

From assessment to a sealed, restored tooth, most straightforward cases take one to two visits.

  1. Assessment

We examine the tooth and take an X-ray to confirm infection or damage at the root before recommending treatment.

  2. Removing the Infected Pulp

Under local anaesthetic, the infected or damaged nerve tissue is removed from inside the tooth.

  3. Cleaning & Shaping

The inside of the tooth's root canals is cleaned, disinfected and shaped to prepare for filling.

  4. Sealing & Restoring

The canal is filled and sealed, and the tooth is typically restored with a crown to protect it long-term, since a root-treated tooth can become more brittle.

Confirmed at consultation

Root canal pricing

  • Root canal treatment (per tooth): confirmed at your assessment, based on the tooth and extent of infection
  • Follow-up crown, if required: from $2,550 (see the Crowns & Bridges page)
