Single Tooth Implants in Sydney CBD

A single missing tooth is small. The space it leaves is not. A single tooth implant replaces that one tooth with a titanium root and a custom crown, without touching the teeth on either side. Our implant-trained dentists have placed 3,457+ implants using the premium Straumann® system, each one guaranteed for 10 years with proper care.

In short

A single tooth implant replaces one missing tooth with a titanium fixture and a custom crown. The teeth either side stay untouched, which is the main difference between an implant and a bridge.

Healing usually takes 3 to 6 months before the final crown is fitted. Suitability comes down to bone volume and gum health, which we confirm with a scan at your consultation.

Single implants at Spa Dental are $4,900 to $6,500 per fixed tooth replacement, covering assessment, scans, implant, crown, appointments and follow-ups.

One tooth, not a section of your mouth

What is a single tooth implant?

A single tooth implant is a titanium post placed into the jaw where your tooth root used to sit, finished with a custom crown shaped and shaded to match the teeth around it. It replaces one tooth, not a section of your mouth.

Because the fixture is set into bone rather than clipped onto your neighbours, the two teeth either side are left exactly as they are. Nothing is ground down. Nothing is shared. You brush and floss it the way you brush and floss everything else.

That fusion is the reason an implant behaves differently to a bridge or a denture. The bone keeps loading, the way it did when the natural root was there, which is what stops the jaw shrinking back at that site.

The three parts:

  • The implant

The titanium fixture that fuses to your jawbone, taking the place of the root.

  • The abutment

The small connector that sits on top of the implant, once healing is complete.

  • The crown

The visible tooth, made to match the shape, shade and bite of the teeth beside it.

Why replace one missing tooth?

A gap looks like the end of the problem. Usually it is the start of a few.

Bone recedes. Jawbone stays dense because a root loads it. Without that load it gradually resorbs, and the ridge at that site flattens over time.

Teeth drift. Neighbouring teeth tilt into the space and the opposing tooth can drop down, because there is nothing left to bite against.

The bite shifts. Chewing quietly moves to the other side, which loads the remaining teeth unevenly.

Cleaning gets harder. Food packs into the gap and around the tilted teeth, which is where decay and gum problems tend to start.

The smile line changes. Even one missing tooth towards the front alters how the lip sits and how the smile reads.

Replacing the tooth early is usually simpler than replacing it late. Bone that has already resorbed may need grafting first, which adds a stage to the treatment.

Are you suitable for a single tooth implant?

Most adults with one missing tooth are. Four things decide it, and we check all four before recommending anything.

Bone volume at the site. An implant needs bone to sit in. If the ridge has resorbed, a bone graft builds it back first, and we plan that into the quote rather than surprising you with it later.

Gum health. Active gum disease is treated before implant placement, not alongside it. Healthy gums are what keep an implant stable long term.

Medical history and medication. Uncontrolled diabetes, some osteoporosis medications, blood thinners, immune conditions and smoking all affect healing and fusion. We ask about all of it, and we tell you honestly if any of it changes the recommendation.

Timing. A tooth that came out last month and a tooth that came out eight years ago need different plans. Both can usually be treated, but the sequence differs.

There is no upper age limit. Bone quality matters far more than the year on your birth certificate. If an implant is not the right answer for your case, we will say so and set out the alternatives, including a bridge or a partial denture.

Five stages

What does the single tooth implant process involve?

Five stages, spread across a few months. The timeline is driven by biology, not by scheduling.

  1. Consultation, scan and plan

A detailed examination with X-rays and a digital scan. We assess bone volume, gum health and your bite, then set out the plan, the stages and the full cost before anything begins.

  2. Implant placement

The titanium fixture is placed into the jaw under local anaesthetic. It is one appointment, and you go home the same day. Where the site allows, a temporary tooth is fitted so you are not left with a gap while it heals.

  3. Healing

The implant fuses to bone through a process called osseointegration. This typically takes 3 to 6 months, and longer for some patients depending on age and general health. If there is no sign of significant fusion at 12 months, we move to a different restorative approach rather than persist with one that is not working.

  4. Abutment and crown

Once the implant is stable, we take a scan and have your custom crown made and fitted. This is the appointment where it starts to look and feel like a tooth rather than an implant.

  5. Review

The implant and crown are checked at your six-monthly visits, the same as the rest of your mouth. Digital previews and temporary restorations are available along the way, so you can see the result before it is final.

How is a single implant different from a bridge or a partial denture?

All three replace one tooth. They do it in very different ways.

Through our National Dental Plan partnership you can access up to $9,000 with no interest, and we also work with Afterpay, Zip and the major health funds, with HICAPS claims processed in-house so your rebate comes off before any plan is applied. Who places your single tooth implant?

Your implant is placed by dentists who have completed postgraduate implant training and who teach the subject to other clinicians.

Dr Lawrence Neville holds a gIDE Dental Implant Master qualification and represents Invisalign internationally, teaching other dentists and consulting on product development.

Dr Sean Parsonage holds a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants).

Between them they bring over 30 years of dental experience to every case, and the practice has placed 3,457+ implants. Our dentists do not only practise their craft, they teach it. Meet the Spa team.

How long will a single tooth implant last?

With good care and regular review, implants commonly last 20 years and often longer. Each Straumann® implant placed here is guaranteed for 10 years with proper care and maintenance.

What keeps it working is unglamorous: brushing twice a day, flossing around the crown, and coming in every six months so we can check the implant and the gum around it. Smoking and heavy alcohol use shorten the lifespan of an implant, the same way they shorten the lifespan of a natural tooth.

Why patients choose us

  • Dr Lawrence Neville (gIDE Dental Implant Master) and Dr Sean Parsonage (Grad Dip Clin Dent, Oral Implants) bring over 30 years of dental experience, and teach implant dentistry to other clinicians.

  • Premium Swiss titanium implants, each one guaranteed for 10 years with proper care and maintenance.

  • Digital previews and temporary restorations let you see the result before your final crown is made.

  • Grafting, if you need it, is planned and quoted at consultation, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.

FAQs

Single Tooth Implants questions? We are glad you asked.

What patients ask us before replacing a single tooth.

The placement itself is done under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel it while it happens. Once the anaesthetic wears off, most people describe something closer to bruising than pain, managed with over-the-counter pain relief. If it is not manageable, call us rather than waiting it out.

Typically three to six months, most of which is healing time while the implant fuses to the bone. Your actual timeline depends on bone quality, whether a graft is needed, and how quickly you heal. We give you a realistic schedule at consultation rather than an optimistic one.

Often yes, but it needs a closer look. When a tooth has been gone for a while, the bone at that site usually resorbs and the neighbouring teeth may have tilted into the space. That can mean a bone graft first, and sometimes a small amount of alignment work before the implant goes in. It is planned at consultation, not discovered mid-treatment.

Yes. The crown is custom made and shade matched to the teeth beside it, with the shape and surface texture planned around your smile line. If the surrounding teeth are due for whitening, we sequence that before the crown is made so the shade still matches afterwards.

Only if the bone at the site is too thin or too short to hold the implant reliably. Bone grafting adds volume so the implant can be placed and heal properly. We check this on the scan and tell you before treatment starts, so the graft is a planned stage with a known cost, not a surprise.

Nothing dramatic happens in a week. Over years, the bone at the site resorbs, the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, the opposing tooth can over-erupt, and your bite redistributes onto the remaining teeth. The gap also becomes harder to keep clean. Leaving it is a valid choice, but it is not a neutral one.

It depends on your fund and your level of cover. Implants are often covered partly under major dental, sometimes with a waiting period. We process HICAPS claims in-house, so you know your rebate before you decide how to pay the rest. Bring your card to your consultation and we will check it for you.
