Two kinds of sleep dentistry

"Sleep dentistry" covers two unrelated things that happen to share a name. The first is sedation: for patients who find dental treatment itself stressful, sedation lets you stay comfortable, and often unaware of the procedure, while it happens. The second is oral appliances for snoring and mild sleep apnoea, worn overnight at home.

This page covers both, handled by a qualified team. If your concern is anxiety about treatment, the sedation options below apply; if it's snoring or overnight breathing, see the appliance section.

Your sedation options

For patients who find dental treatment itself stressful, sedation lets you stay comfortable, and often unaware of the procedure, while it happens. We match the option to your anxiety, not a default.

Three sedation options:

Happy gas (nitrous oxide)

A light, fast-acting sedation breathed through a mask, wearing off within minutes of removal. Suited to mild anxiety or shorter procedures.

Section B, Snoring & sleep apnoea

Snoring appliances: how they work

If you or your partner deal with snoring or breathing difficulties overnight, a custom oral appliance holds your lower jaw gently forward to keep your airway open, reducing or eliminating snoring for many patients.

  1. Impressions Taken

We take an impression of your teeth to build a mouthpiece that fits you specifically, not a generic shape.

  2. Custom Fabrication

Your device is made from a hard-wearing plastic, built to hold your jaw in a slightly forward position overnight.

  3. Wear & Adjust

Worn while you sleep, the device opens your airway, improving breathing and, for many patients, sleep quality. Benefits include better quality sleep, improved overall health, and a far less invasive option than surgery or a CPAP machine for suitable cases.

Why patients choose us

  • Vital signs are monitored throughout any sedated procedure for your safety.

  • We'll recommend the lightest option that gets you comfortable, rather than defaulting to the most sedating one.

FAQs

Sleep Dentistry questions? We are glad you asked.

The questions patients ask us most about sedation and sleep appliances.

Sedation dentistry keeps you relaxed or unaware during a dental procedure. A sleep appliance is a device you wear overnight at home to reduce snoring or mild sleep apnoea. They're unrelated treatments that happen to share this page.

Yes, when administered and monitored by a qualified team, which is how we manage every sedated case, with hospital-grade monitoring throughout.

With IV sedation, many patients recall little to nothing of the procedure. Oral sedation and happy gas leave more awareness, with happy gas wearing off within minutes.

For many patients with mild snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea caused by the jaw and airway, yes, a custom device that holds the jaw forward can meaningfully reduce snoring.

For suspected obstructive sleep apnoea, we may recommend a sleep study to confirm severity before treatment, since more severe cases need a different approach.
